The First Amendment is the primary support beam for America and our constitutional republic. The right to allow even the vilest among us to say what we think makes us stronger, not weaker. Now we get to the heart of the matter. The ACLU posted this picture today as part of its effort to redefine for the public its stand on free speech, and how it might limit that stand. Here you have a toddler holding an American flag. The caption: “This is the future ACLU members want.” The intent was keeping our freedoms safe for our children. It immediately came under siege from the social networking mob claiming the picture advocates white supremacy which, according to these people, is everywhere…forcing the ACLU to ultimately take the picture down. Since when does a picture of a baby with a flag indicate white supremacy? Couple that with the action of ESPN moving football commentator Robert Lee to a different football game because his name might generate controversy…what have we degenerated into? When posting a perfectly innocent picture like this is somehow a statement of “white supremacy,” what does that say about our country? When someone needs be concerned about how his/her last name might be viewed at a sporting event, what does that say about our country? It is the silly season. Unfortunately, the silly season is a dangerous season.
