Right out of the gate President Trump is dealing with one of the members of the modern day Axis of Evil (Pyongyang, Damascus, Tehran). North Korea has been a problem pushed down the road since the Korean War. In 1950, North Korean communist forces invaded South Korea. Under the auspices of the United Nations, the United States sent in troops to defend South Korea. General Douglas MacArthur, commanding the American troops, pushed the invading communists back into North Korea and towards the Chinese border. In December of 1950, the Chinese Communists sent in a massive force of troops driving the Americans back into South Korea. MacArthur wanted to bomb the Chinese across the Chinese border and use Chinese Nationalist troops to invade China. Truman said no. MacArthur went public with the dispute and was eventually fired for insubordination. MacArthur was right.
Barack Obama has been pinned with moniker for US Korean policy…Strategic Patience. But in reality, that has been the policy of the United States since a cease fire “ended” the Korean Conflict in 1953. The fact of the matter is every President since Dwight Eisenhower has turned his back on the issue…kicking the can down the road until today. We watched in silence as North Korea starved its people to pay for its nuclear capabilities. Deal after deal…some involving direct or indirect transfer of US funds to North Korea…were ignored time and time again as American economic largess was used against us. The test launching of an ICBM on July 4 by the crazies in North Korea now means that it has nuclear weapons and the means by which to deliver them to the United States. The options available to the United States, except for the most dire, are slim to non-existent.
The Chinese can shut North Korea down overnight. Instead, since the meeting in Florida between Trump and the Chinese President, trade has actually increased between China and North Korea by over 20%. Over the short term of his presidency, Trump has relied on his belief he can get the Chinese to intervene and stop the madness. That is a fool’s belief! Kim Jong-Un is a 20 something whack job who has killed his own family members and fed the bodies to the dogs to bolster his own power.
If I were President Trump, I would begin a slow but steady buildup of American troops along the DMZ. I would begin the construction of new air bases in South Korea. I would station American warships right off the coast of North Korea with the guns aimed right at Pyongyang. I would begin the nuclearization of South Korea and Japan. I would not quit until the Chinese do what we all know they should be doing, while beefing up our American missile defense systems in a major way.
Korea is a dangerous nation. It should be an object lesson for our policy aimed at Tehran…which is more disastrous than our policy with Korea. Shame on our past American presidents for allowing these two deadly situations to develop.
