Is there a bigger schmuck than Governor Andrew Cuomo? Here is a guy that makes you question how a person of his intellect could attain the governorship of a major state like New York. Granted the Democratic Party is filled to the brim with unimpressive and unabashed politicians who gleefully make the oddest and oftentimes hypocritical statements that make you scratch your head, but Andrew Cuomo has that certain ability to whine in the most irritating of voices about things he feels outraged about that clearly are screw-ups of his own making.
Andrew Cuomo this week went on a rant about Trump’s “mishandling” of COVID-19, as though Cuomo was blameless for the thousands of people dead because of his own stupidity. According to the governor, COVID-19 is now a scandal much worse than Watergate, and that Trump has been wrong about COVID-19 from day one. In Cuomo’s opinion, Trump is worse than Richard Nixon and now people are going to die because of him.
I did not realize COVID-19 has yet turned into a scandal, though one could surmise many scandals are related to COVID-19. One scandal would be how this virus came to be in the first place, with that blame falling on China covering it up—though it is probably closer to the truth that they purposely released this virus with the intent of killing the economy to oust Trump. Another scandal would be the waste of taxpayer dollars and time on politicized impeachment hearings in January that could have better been spent on things like preparing for COVID-19. Then there is the scandal of Trump correctly closing travel to China and the media getting all hot and bothered about how Trump was racist. They still owe Trump an apology for that disgraceful reporting.
But the biggest scandal of all belongs to governor Cuomo, who in his directive sent COVID-19 patients to nursing homes to be amongst the most vulnerable people in the population, causing the deaths of thousands of people. Cuomo has tried to backpedal this citing a report from the State Department of Health that the nursing home workers were the cause and not his directive, but issues have been raised with how independent this report is. Nonetheless, Cuomo had no business sending those patients to nursing homes, and if his directive was not the cause of the problem, it certainly exacerbated it.
32,000 dead New Yorkers is nothing to brag about and that number far exceeds the number of deaths for any other state in the U.S. Per capita, it far exceeds any other state in the U.S. Cuomo should be holding his head in shame, but instead in his hubris goes on Jimmy Fallon patting himself on the back for a job well done which was not a good job by any measure. Sure, the curve has been flattened in New York, but the death toll is inexcusable and certainly nothing to marginalize on national television.
While Cuomo’s self-congratulating is sickening, his buffoonery on blaming Trump for everything COVID-19 related is a fun exercise in make believe. However, neither his congratulations or blame help the residents of New York or make up for his incompetence. New Yorkers deserve better.
